Preparing for Spring 2012

Well although it’s not quite spring there are still jobs that can be done on the lawn. Ideally if it’s frozen it’s probably best to stay off the grass to avoid needless damage to the lawn. As it’s been so mild this year we’ve been able to get lots of scarifying and aeration done in preparation for the spring months. Now is an ideal opportunity to do this so as to stimulate soil organisms and root growth. It would also be a good opportunity to give the lawn a further moss killer application. The iron sulphate solution will not only give your lawn a great colour but will also keep the moss from spreading further into your lawn. Ideally then you would need to scarify it out. The moss killer too will keep worm casts down, which have become more prevalent due to the wet winter months. The iron sulphates slightly acidic mixture stops the worms from surfacing and causing unsightly casts. We are currently offering a special offer of a half price moss treatment for customers who have scarifying and aeration treatments with us.
Over the next few weeks after we’ve done our scarification and aeration services we will begin our new years regular treatments. We have scheduled a start of March 12th and you should already have your date pre-booked in from your last treatment. If you are unsure then just give us a call or an email and we’ll send you your date. We look forward to continuing to provide you and your lawn with the best service in the North West. See you soon.

Six Steps to Superb Scarifying

Been a while since my last blog but I thought with the winter months upon us many of you will be starting to think about scarifying and aeration. Lawn scarification is an absolute essential to keep away moss and thatch from building up in your lawn. Many lawn mowers have scarifier attachments on them and this can be an easy way to keep on top of the scarifying. However, most lawns require a more powerful scarifier to cut through the moss and thatch and provide effective removal. Lancashire Lawncare offer this service to you and can really make a difference to the health of your lawn. Hollow-Tine Aeration significantly helps too in keeping the moss at bay as well as relieving compaction and allowing air and water to get to the roots of the grass. Although we as a company cover many customers who require this treatment we recommend that the early spring months are the optimum time to carry these proceedures out. We are more than happy to provide a quote for these services so get in touch today at enquiries@lancashirelawncare.co.uk

1. Identify if the lawn needs scarifying
2. Scarify at 45 degrees
3. Tidy up the moss and thatch (you can use a lawn mower on a high setting to do this although a leaf blower and rake are more effective)
4. Go over the lawn in straight lines
5. Tidy up the moss and thatch (you can use a lawn mower on a high setting to do this although a leaf blower and rake are more effective)
6. Use a hollow-tine aerator to finish off the job*

*some prefer to aerate the lawn at the start of the job so as to leave it looking tidy at the end. There is no right or wrong way to do this really it’s purely up to the discretion of the householder or lawn care provider

Half Price Moss Killer With Scarification and Aeration

It’s that time of the year again when we start to take bookings for scarification and aeration. Due to the wet autumn that we’ve had we are expecting another bad winter/spring of moss. We are therefore offering in addition to the regularly scheduled moss killing application a half price application to all customers who book us in for scarification and aeration. This will further aid and slow down the moss taking over the lawn and undoing the hard work done in clearing out the moss through scarifying. We will carry out this extra treatment in the Early Spring. Of course we offer an additional moss killing treatment to all our customers at the beginning of the year pre-Spring weed and feed. If that’s something of interest to you contact us for a booking. For those having scarification and aeration if you’d really like to get on top of the moss then please book in with us now quoting HALF PRICE MOSS TREATMENT.

Lawn Scarification

We are now taking bookings for Lawn Scarification 2012. Scarifying your lawn regularly reduces moss and thatch build up and allows new growth to come through more quickly. You will notice the benefits of this cleansing procedure, however you will need to book early as there is a limited window of opportunity to scarify at the optimum times. Book now to avoid disappointment.

If you are unsure about the costing of lawn scarification then please contact us for a quote. The easiest way to find out is just by trebling your treatment cost.

Eg a £20 lawn treatment will be a £60 lawn scarification job.

Check out our other lawn scarification articles by clicking on the tags cloud or the catergories section on the right hand side of the page.

Whilst initially looking a mess, lawn scarification really does benefit your lawn.

Red Thread

We are writing this blog as some of our customers have developed redthread in their lawns. This is not a major concern, however, it can look unsightly and cause brown patces to develop on the lawn.
Identifying Red Thread in your lawn is quite straightforward. You will notice a pale patch of grass with pinky/reddish tinges at the ends. Red Thread is a lawn fungus and is treated by good fertilisation, regular watering (not overwatering) and good lawn cutting. Our Lancashire Lawncare team have identified this as a problem in some of the lawns recently and have brought it to the attention of the customer. We feel it is good to keep you all informed about your lawn so as to provide a personal touch to our service. We have successfully treated Red Thread over the years and continue to be able to do so. If you feel your lawn has the symptoms then give us a call and we’ll sort it out for you.

Summary
•Remove clippings after mowing
•Water deeply and infrequently only if conditions are dry
•Do NOT water in the evenings
•Once the disease has ceased aerate and possibly scarify the lawn to improve drying and remove thatch that harbours fungal spores

Patchy Lawns

Over the past few months you’ll have noticed that we have had some very patchy lawns. This is primarily down to the dry weather we’ve been having. This April was the driest on record and even on overcast days there has been very little rain. When it has rained the dry conditions have left the ground hard, compacted and therefore more difficult for the rain to penetrate the surface. This is why we are seeing patches. Some areas have enjoyed the rain whilst others are too compacted and have not had the rain sink in. A simple test you can try is by taking a garden fork and standing on it. You’ll notice in the lush areas the ground is soft and is penetrated easily. In the dry patchy areas, however, you will not be able to do this.

Should I cancel my treatment then?

We strongly advise that you do not. The regular feeding that we provide will speed up the recovery of your lawn when the rains do come. Added to this the fertilisers that we use are a slow release fertiliser so they will continue to feed and keep your lawn healthy even in the driest of conditions. We would always advise that regular watering of your lawn will greatly help too.

We’ve compiled a simple guide for you to download should you wish which will give you an idea on possible lawn issues.

We hope you are enjoying the regular news features and we’ll try and address any common problems or questions you have.

All the best

Your Lancashire Lawncare team.

Summer Lawn Care Advice

As we are now in the Summer months I’m sure like me you love to be in your garden, BBQ at the ready and entertaining your friends. The only thing you could be missing is a lovely lawn for you all to enjoy! Well we can provide the help and advice you need. Don’t forget our lawn care covers Crosby, Formby, Southport, Preston, Chorley, Fylde and all surrounding areas. Here are a few tips to keep your lawn looking great throughout the Summer.

1. Call Lancashire Lawncare - Why? We provide the needed nourishment for your lawn in the form of specific, well regulated fertiliser. At the same time we spray the lawn for any weeds that may be spoiling the appearance of the lawn.
2. You must keep on top of the watering - Why? Lawns, flowers and plants are all dependant upon water to grow and survive. A large exposed lawn is especially susceptible to drying out if it doesn’t have a good root base, from regular feeding, and is not watered regularly either from the rain or from your household watersource. Aim to water either early morning or the evening when the water will not just quickly evaporate away.
3. Mow the lawn, not too short - Why? The strength of the grass is in both the root and the blade. If you’ve cared well for the roots you are in a better position, however leaving the grass just a little longer at this time of the year keeps not only the colour of your lawn but also better stamina if it’s especially hot. A cylinder mower is arguably better as it leaves less ‘droppage’ on the lawn.
