Autumn Garden LeavesThe rains have arrived along with strong blustery winds but I’m sure you’d all agree the temperatures are still ok. It’s only just in the last few days that we’ve had a little dip really. How does that affect the lawns? Well, considering the hot drought we experienced over July the lawns on the whole are recovering well. The long autumn has provided good growing conditions and coupled with the autumn feed application the lawns are strong and healthy. We do give a warning though that you will still need to keep on top of the maintenance of your lawn over the autumn / winter months.

Leaves will especially be a problem and its essential to keep them off the lawn as best as you can. As they drop not only do they bury and rot on the ground causing fungal growth, they also shield the lawns from essential sunlight. This means that the lawns die beneath the surface and you often find that they go bald underneath too. So as and when you can it’s good to get a rake on there to get them off (giving a little scarify at the same time) or use your mower or blower to clear them off.

By now you should have had your autumn weed and feed so the growth will continue over the next few weeks while the temperature in the ground remains above 5 degrees celcius. The rain will also help. Any mowing that you do should be just taking the tops off to maintain a neat appearance as taking it too low will result in the moss taking over.

Leatherjackets have also given rise to concern due to the very wet year we had last year. They have appeared in unprecedented numbers and all the little larvae are started growing and no doubt your seen plenty of ‘daddy long leg’ activity in and around your gardens too. If this is the case please contact us regarding a specialised insecticide treatment which will keep them away. Leather jackets can absolutely ruin a lawn so we don’t want it to happen to your lawn.

As always we thank you for your custom and look forward to seeing you at the next treatment. Any recommendations are gladly received.
