Quite a lot of our customers this year have complained about their lawns being pecked to death by the birds. This is particularly evident in mossy lawns where large holes appear. What’s the reason and what’s the solution?
Some birds will no doubt will use bits of moss and grass in their nest building and therefore may collect it from a nearby source aka your lawn. However a more likely cause for the birds being on your lawn is because you have grubs in the lawn. Don’t panic!! Grubs in the lawn can cause major problems but they can also be effectively treated so there’s no need to worry.
The two main lawn grubs are the Chafer Grub and the Leatherjacket. Chafer Grubs tend to make an appearance around May/June time and Leather jackets in the Autumn. I must add that due to the mild winter we had this year I have found Leatherjackets in one or two lawns already this year and it’s only April! These have had a pesticide application and are now in recovery.
If you watch your lawn carefully you will be able to spot what the birds are pecking at. It may well be moss but it also could be those pesky grubs. A simple test that you can carry out to see if you have grubs in the lawn is to place a bag bin bag on the lawn over night, weighing it down with something so it doesn’t blow away. In the morning check under the bag. If you have grubs then they will have risen to the surface. Next pick up the phone and call us on 0800 2982621 or if you want to contact Michael for the Preston and Fylde area on 07812 030622 or Rob in the Southport, Formby and Crosby area on 07817 549426.
Save yourself the anguish and give us a call. On most occasions we can put something down there and then to help cure whatever problem you are having.
