The drought conditions and subsequent hose pipe ban have indeed caused many lawns to look a little weary and maybe brown in patches but on the whole they’ve survived remarkably well and will return to full glory when the rains come. Many have enquired as to how they should proceed regarding the scheduled treating of the lawns. Is the lawn care treatment going to do anything? Will it help? Will it hinder?
Well, the simple answer is that lawns that continue to have the treatment, in our experience, will recover quicker than those that don’t. We would certainly not force you to have a treatment if you felt it would not be beneficial but we would recommend that by keeping on top of the scheduled care your lawns will return more promptly than if you don’t. For those who have lawns upon sandy soil, naturally a more difficult lawn to maintain, watering is essential to keep your lawn green and healthy and a large amount of the water soaks through quickly. The treatments will certainly aid progress in recovery and with the rains forecast over the next few weeks you will see the colour returning and new growth appearing.
Many customers have also asked about reseeding and why nothing seems to be taking. Again the simple answer is that there simply hasn’t been enough rain. A task you can do to check your lawn is to take a garden fork and try to push it into the ground. For many the fork will barely break the surface. This is due to the soil compacting due to lack of rain or moisture. The ground being so hard naturally makes it more difficult for the seeds roots to break the surface and therefore will just sit on the surface seemingly lifeless.
We would recommend that you do not give up hope for your lawn but keep up the scheduled lawn care and allow nature to play its part with the rain while the hose pipe ban is on. While the ground is dry remember that the grass will be brittle and can be damaged easily so try to avoid walking on it too much.
